KUZHIPARAMBIL THARAVADU

The Kuzhiparambil Tharavadu can be compared to a huge Banyan Tree with its roots embedded at Mulankunnathu Kavu and its branches spread across Kerala, other states of India and abroad.

It is inferred that the Kuzhiparambil Tharavadu took its roots in Mulankunnathu Kavu during the Malayalam era calendar 700-800.This information was gleaned from the Ashtamangalayaprashna conducted at the Kuzhiparambil Bagavathi Temple on the 12th day of the month of thulam in the year 1166(Malayalam era calendar). It is persumed that our ancestor who was an ardent devotee of Devi during his travels away from his birth-place Kadathanaadu reached Mulankunnathu Kavu and liking thee place decided to stay there for the night under Banyan tree invoking his "Devi" as well as his two "Nagas". Unknown to him during the night one of the Nagas slipped-out in the locality. Not finding themissing Naga in the morning the traveller moved-over to the place where the Kuzhiparambil Temple is at present located and decided to built his home there. A make-shift temple for his "DEVI" and a place for the remaining Naga was arranged at the site. This ancestor who is supposed to have invoked the Devi(Bhadrakali) and the Nagas at the present temple site is also referred as 'MUTHAPPAN'(the senior father or the first one). His descedants till today worship him as the harbinger of peace, health, education and wealth. There is a special place for him close to the Sreekovil of the Devi Temple. When Sarppakalams are held every year, it has become a custom(ritual) to bring the Naga that went missing at Mulankunnathu Kavu Centre to the present temple site with a lot of fanfare, dance and music. Ladies of Kuzhiparambil Tharavadu young and old will be particpating in this ritual with Lighted-Thaalams. As the members of the family multiplied they spread out to different places in Kerala like Kadanassery, Marathamkode, Kidangoor, Kadangode, Chittanda, Vattayi, Thrissur, Ernakulam, etc. and to other states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi. Some have even settled in foreign countries like USA, Britain, Australia and Brazil.

The Devi Temple is located in the 'Kudiyiruppu'(Place-owned) of one Sree Ayyappan(also called Kunjumon) son of Sree Krishnan a 'Karnavar'(Senior one) of the Tharavadu. It is understood that there were idols of Devis, Nagas and Vishnumayas etc here. It is understood from old-timers that the temple was straw-tatched and that one day none other than Sree Narayana Guru visited the Tharavadu and upon his instructions the temple and the deities were renovated after conducting necessary Poojas. The idols of goddess Bhadrakali, Ganapathi and the Nagas of the Sarpakkavu were permanently installed to be worshipped. A special place or 'Thara' for the Muthappan was also built close to the temple. In those days there was no permanent priest in the temple nor daily Poojas. 'Kunji' the mother of Ayyappan cleaned the temple and premises and lighted the lamp in the temple everyday. Their decedents continued the good work. Yearly temple festivals were rare and in-between. On occassions when there was a get-together of the elderly folks they would conduct 'Sarppakalams' to please the Nagas lasting for two or three days culminating with a Bhagavathi Pattu(a song for Devi) on last day of the festival. The expenses connected with the conducting of Sarppakalms wrer managed by individuals of the different branches of the Tharavadu. At Times there would be a break in conducting the Sarppakalams due to various reasons the frequent one being the demise of any family member or members.

The Kuzhiparambil Dharma Daiva Trust was registered in 18-06-1989. Sri. KA Madhavan donated 15.25 cents of his land where the temple was located to the trust on 07-02-1996(Regd. on 07-02-1996) on 03-06-2001 the Trust decided to rennovate the temple. On 11-05-2002 Dr. T.S.Vijayan Thantri of Karumattra was made the 'Thanthri' of the renovated temple and under his guidance and after necessary Poojas and rituals the idol of the Devi was also renovated.

Nowadays monthly Poojas, Special Poojas on request by family members,Aayilya Pooja during the month of 'Kanni', Prathishtadinam in the month of Medam (Aswathy Star) and the Sarppakalam before Vishu are being conducted every year.

In the general body meeting of the trust held on 11-05-2005 it was decided to construct a temple 'Nadapura' and the structure was completed and opened in 19-09-2006. Aayilya Pooja was also conducted on the same day. The Trust purchased 6.93 cents of land on the north side of the temple from Sri.K.A.Madhavan in 12-12-2007. At present the temple has under its ownership 22.18 cents of land and is inclusive of the Temple itself made of concrete, Thidappally (where Payasam is prepared for the daity), fenced Sarppakkavu, Nadapura, Well etc.

KUZHIPARAMBIL DHARMA DAIVA TEMPLE

The ancestors came from Kadathanadu to Mulakunnathu kavu, they are believers of god so they taken their idols of Devi and worshipped. This temple was situated in the Kudiyirappu of Ayyappan s/o Sreekrishnan a elder karanavar of the tharavadu.the family temple was prepared. They says that, the older days there was idols of Devis, Nagas, Vishnumaya sitting places of karanavas etc. Once Sree Narayana Guru comes and visit there and having food. That time he construct to retake the idols and worship. From that day the worshipping idols are only Bagavathi, Ganapathi and Nagas. That days there was no permanent priest and poojas in the temple. The owner of the place Mr. Ayyappan's(kunjumon) mother Kunji cleaned the temple and lightening the temple. There was no yearly celebrations in the temple. In certain situations the family members make/co-ordinate 'Sarpakalam' and the ending day they make 'Bagavathipattu'. The ownership of the temple controlled by one family that also makes personal revenges. For solving these problems they make a trust. Sri. K.A Madhavan gave 15.25 cent land to the trust. In 3/6/2001 the trust decided to renew the temple and 11/5/2002, refix the idol of Devy by Kondthukunnathu sri. Vijayan. Later monthly worship, special worships for persons Aayilya pooja, refix day worship sarpakalam and Bagavathipattu etc. Conduct before Vishu. 11/5/2005 day in the trust meeting they decided to make an out-house for walking/path house and started its working. In 19/9/2006 the work completed and the Nadappura samarpana will be completed. In 12/12/2007 from the nearest place of the temple(north side) 6.93 unit bought by the trust.
